Phonological Awareness Practice Test

This question tests phonemic awareness, specifically the ability to delete the initial sound from a word. In the word train, the first sound you hear is the /t/ sound. If you remove that sound, you’re left with the remaining sounds /reɪn/, which you hear as “rain.” So deleting the initial sound forms rain.

The other forms don’t fit because they wouldn’t result from removing only the first sound: keeping the initial sound would give train, removing a different sound or adding a suffix would yield forms like rainy, etc.
